Are you a chocolate or caramel type? Perhaps both?
When I step into a sweets store or pour-over a dessert menu, I tend to gravitate to chocolate…anything and everything chocolate! In fact, I gravitate extremely close to the dark chocolate offerings. I am sucker for dark chocolate! The darker the better! Nevertheless, I like to change it up every once and while. When I feel the urge to change up of my sweets, I like caramel, or in this case, dolce de leche.
Dolce de leche is very similar to caramel. The tastes are similar, yet the preparations are quite different. Dolce de leche is incredibly simple to make. Don’t you just love that?!
Dolce de Leche:
– one can of sweetened condensed milk
– one medium pot
– 3 hours (do not leave the house while it cooks, danger zone!)
Do not open the can, but make two small openings at the top so it can vent.
Place the can of sweetened condensed milk in the medium pot. Fill the pot with water, leaving about 3/4 inches from the water line to the top of the can. Bring the water to a boil and immediately reduce to a simmer.
Simmer the can in the water for 3 to 4 hours*. Make sure you continue filling the pot with water because water will evaporate during the 3 to 4 hours.
Remove the can and allow to cool. Open and stir the gooey caramel-y nectar!
Drizzle on pretzels, fruit or ice cream! How about swirl into brownies or cupcakes?! This is not hard to enjoy, I promise.
